Dorsill is a group of islands shrouded in fog with a community struggling to survive in the face of economic ruin. Then a wealthy businessman Christopher Sheldon buys the islands and the local inhabitants are relieved, owing him a debt of thanks.
They don't think to ask too many questions about where the money has come from, or what he and his friends are up to. Nor are they concerned that he very rarely appears in the only village. Even when the first few islanders begin dying they assume the deaths are all natural causes: allergies, flu, fishing accident. The livestock behaving oddly is not even a concern.
No, if there's anything to arouse suspicion, it's the arrival of retired civil servant Sir Edward Baddesley. But generally life goes on, with its little triumphs and upsetting tragedies.
