The Edward E. Smith Memorial Award for Imaginative Fiction (also known as the Skylark) is named after the acclaimed and much loved science fiction author EE "Doc" Smith. It is an annual award presented to the person who, in the opinion of the New England Science Fiction Association (NESFA) has contributed significantly to science fiction, both through work in the field and by exemplifying the personal qualities which made the late "Doc" Smith well-loved by those who knew him.
The winner is voted for by the members of the NESFA and announced at the annual convention called Boskone - named after the fictional council of the same name in EE Doc Smith's Lensman series.
There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea's asleep, and the rivers dream. People made of smoke, and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there’s injustice, and somewhere else the tea's getting cold.
